About Dr. Wise

Dr. Wise is a licensed psychologist in clinical practice in Frisco, Texas. He has over three decades of education, training and experience in the mental health field and has been licensed as a psychologist in Texas since 1997. Dr. Wise is a highly regarded expert in the DFW mental health community and is a frequent speaker and presenter for area professional organizations, schools and groups.

Dr. Wise’s clinical practice specializes in the assessment and treatment of depression and anxiety, health psychology, divorce adjustment, life and career transitions, healthy intimacy and relationships, and long-term recovery from addiction.  Another clinical focus and passion for Dr. Wise is the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents with behavioral and emotional problems, particularly anxiety and depression.

Before moving to Texas to pursue his doctoral training at Baylor University, Dr. Wise worked in Baltimore, Maryland in the area of addiction treatment for the Johns Hopkins Health System. He later worked as an outpatient therapist for The Epoch Counseling Center, a substance abuse treatment facility in Baltimore County, and as a group and family therapist on the inpatient psychiatric unit of Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore.

Dr. Wise holds a Bachelors (B.A.) degree in Psychology from the University of Maryland Baltimore County and a Master’s degree (M.A.) in Clinical Psychology from Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore.  He moved to Texas in 1991 to pursue doctoral training at Baylor University where he received the Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree in Clinical Psychology in 1995.  

Dr. Wise’s A.P.A. accredited pre-doctoral internship was in Dallas, TX at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and at Terrell State Hospital.  Shortly after graduation, he joined the faculty at U.T. Southwestern Medical Center where for over 25 years he has been a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychology, training Ph.D. students in the practice of psychotherapy.  

Dr. Wise completed his post-doctoral fellowship in the area of behavioral medicine and health psychology at the Dallas Spinal Rehabilitation Center, working with individuals with chronic pain.  An area of his clinical expertise and focus is in health psychology, which involves the application of psychological science to helping people manage health challenges and chronic medical conditions.

Throughout his career Dr. Wise has been active in the community and in the leadership of various professional organizations.  He held multiple positions and served as President of the Dallas Psychological Association in 2010-2011.  He is currently President of Collaborative Divorce Collin County, an organization of legal, financial, and mental health professionals who help people settle divorce disputes in a manner that enhances cooperation, communication and healthy co-parenting. 

When not working, Dr. Wise enjoys spending time with his wife, family and pets.  He is a life-long runner, avid reader, world traveler and a huge fan of live music.

Therapy is a collaborative process and it’s important that you feel comfortable with the person sitting across from you.  My approach to therapy is highly relational and I strive to establish and maintain a safe environment for personal growth and exploration.   I bring my passion, wisdom, caring, humor and extensive experience to help you get where you want to go.  My focus is holistic, so a successful outcome is about far more than a reduction of symptoms.  My aim is to help patients achieve their fullest potential, to thrive, and to learn to enjoy their lives. 

I work hard to keep up with the latest developments in the field of Psychology focusing on scientific, evidence-based interventions.  I have training and experience in a variety of clinical techniques including interpersonal, cognitive-behavioral (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, behavioral relaxation and insight-oriented approaches.  I select those that fit best for you and your situation.
