Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started?

Dr. Wise will first schedule a short phone call with you to learn more about you, your current concerns, issues and needs.  There is no charge for this phone consultation.  If Dr. Wise determines that your needs are a good fit for his expertise and you decide to move forward, then he will schedule an initial consultation with you.  This can be done in-person or remotely via telehealth.  If you are a parent seeking treatment for your child, Dr. Wise will always have an initial parent consultation first before meeting with your child.  Contact Dr. Wise for a complimentary (10-15 minute) phone consultation.

What are your fees?

Service charges for therapy are based on a 50-minute session.  The initial diagnostic session or consultation rate is $200.00 (unless other arrangements are made with Dr. Wise prior to the first meeting).  This first session typically lasts a full hour.  The rate for subsequent sessions is $175.00 per session.  Fees are subject to periodic adjustment.  It is expected that you will pay for your first appointment at the time of that appointment, unless special circumstances (such as coverage by an insurance plan) require other arrangements.  Services are billed at contracted rates for plans which Dr. Wise is an “in-network” provider. If you cannot afford the full rate for services, please talk with Dr. Wise.  He may be able to offer a discounted fee based on financial need or your particular circumstances.  Dr. Wise accepts cash, checks, and all major credit and debit cards.

Do you accept insurance?

As a convenience to patients, Dr. Wise is a credentialed or “in-network” provider with several major insurance companies.   Currently, he accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Aetna, and First Health PPO and POS plans.  He does not accept HMO plans.  He is an “out of network” provider with United, Cigna, UMR.   Dr. Wise is not currently a Medicare or Tricare provider.  Insurance plan participation may vary over time. Many patients have “out of network” benefits or an FSA or HSA plan they can use.  Dr. Wise’s office can check your benefits and file insurance claims at your request.  Dr. Wise will be happy to discuss with you any insurance issues or questions you may have.

Are you available on evenings or weekends?

Dr. Wise sees patients most evenings (Monday to Thursday) with his last appointment time at 6 P.M.   He does not see patients on weekends.  After school and after work appointment times are in high demand and openings at those times are often limited.  Please speak with Dr. Wise about his current availability if you are needing a late afternoon or evening appointment.

Do you provide evaluation or testing services?

In some circumstances, procuring a formal evaluation (e.g., one-on-one testing administered by a clinical psychologist over 6-8 hours) can be helpful to clarify diagnosis and guide treatment recommendations.  Dr. Wise offers only limited assessment for problems such as ADHD and personality testing to guide psychotherapy.  When a more comprehensive evaluation is needed (such as a psychoeducational, neuropsychological, or diagnostic test battery), Dr. Wise partners with assessment specialists in the DFW area and can offer you referrals.

What if I need medication as well?

As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Wise does not prescribe medication.  If you or he believe you may benefit from medication, Dr, Wise will discuss this with you in detail and help you evaluate the potential risks and benefits.  Then, if you decide to seek medication in conjunction with psychotherapy, Dr. Wise can work with your family doctor, pediatrician, or provide a referral to a board certified psychiatrist.   Dr. Wise works closely with many top psychiatrists in the area.

What is your cancellation policy?

You may cancel or reschedule an appointment as long as you provide at least 24 hours advance notice. Please try and provide longer notice if your appointment is scheduled for a Monday. A cancellation fee of $75.00 will be charged if you are unable to give at least 24 hours notice that you will not be attending a scheduled session and the reason for canceling is not an emergency. Insurance does not cover this fee.

Client Testimonial

"I am so thankful that I found Dr. Wise. I moved to the DFW area soon after the loss of my mother and was trying to manage grief along with anxiety and depression. I had been to other psychologists previously, but before Dr. Wise I didn't know what an enormous difference finding the right person can make to your life. He is intelligent and knowledgeable, but also warm and funny. He has given me strategies for managing my mental health, held me accountable for taking care of myself, and helped me to talk through problems and stressors at home and at work. He has taken the time to really get to know me so that he is offering help specific to my needs, not just a cookie cutter solution. He is clearly an expert in his field, and I honestly can't recommend him highly enough. I look forward to my sessions and always leave feeling heard and ready to face the challenges ahead."
