Collaborative Divorce

If you are at a point where divorce or separation is a possibility, then you may want to consider collaborative divorce as a better option to litigation.

Collaborative divorce is an alternative dispute resolution process legislated by the State of Texas which enables couples and families to participate in a confidential, customized divorce process to arrive at the best possible solution to ending a marriage.  Collaborative divorce promotes healthy communication skills, positive relationships, and effective co-parenting.

Dr. Wise has specialized training in collaborative approaches to divorce that help reduce the negative impact of divorce on children and families.  His interest in collaborative law evolved from his work with children, adolescents, and adults who were experiencing the adverse effects of litigated divorce.

Advantages of collaborative divorce include:

  • It takes place outside of a courtroom.

  • It is private and confidential.  Financial and family privacy is maximized.

  • It empowers you to make decisions that are best for you and your children.

  • It allows for a customized settlement based on your needs and priorities.

  • Can help establish a healthy co-parenting relationship after divorce.

Dr. Wise serves as a neutral mental health professional (MHP) in collaborative cases.  He works as part of a team with attorneys and a neutral financial professional to help families resolve their divorce. If you have children, Dr. Wise can help you and your spouse learn how to co-parent and make well-informed parenting decisions.  This is a legal or forensic role and it is not the same as therapy.  Dr. Wise can explain more about the collaborative process when you consult with him.

Dr. Wise is currently the President of Collaborative Divorce Collin County (CDCC) a practice group of attorneys, psychologists, and financial professionals who are committed to promoting and practicing collaborative law. Dr. Wise has published and presented to the State Bar of Texas in the areas of team communication and debriefing and psychological screening of clients to determine suitability for entering the collaborative divorce process.

As a neutral mental health professional (MHP) in your case, Dr. Wise may:

  • Provide support and assistance throughout the divorce process.

  • Help you manage the difficult emotions which arise during divorce.

  • Model and teach effective communication and problem-solving skills.

  • Lead the collaborative meetings, manage the agenda, and monitor the “emotional temperature” in the room.

  • Facilitate communication among the professional team.

  • Support a “safe” environment for you to explore your interests, needs, and goals.

  • Educate you about the impact of divorce on your children and how to talk with them about it.

  • Guide you and your spouse to create a customized, comprehensive parenting plan that best meets the needs of your children and family.

  • Lay the foundation for an effective co-parenting relationship after divorce.

Post-divorce, Dr. Wise can serve as a Parenting Coordinator (PC)

A parenting coordinator under Texas law requires additional training in family therapy, child development, family dynamics, domestic violence, mediation and alternative dispute resolution.  Parenting Coordination is a confidential process focused on helping parents during and after divorce to learn to more effectively parent and co-parent.

Sometimes after a divorce is over, parenting challenges, disagreements, and questions will arise. Clients can then return to Dr. Wise for further consultation and assistance.   Decreasing conflict between parents is important because of the impact this can have on your child’s adjustment.  Parenting Coordination is available to parents as an alternative to traditional adversarial legal proceedings. Dr. Wise can help parents work together to do what is best for their children.
